at Gallimaufry Gallery, Blairmore Calum MacFarlane-Barrow was born and brought and up in the Highlands of Scotland and in fact has never lived anywhere else! From his early childhood he has always been fascinated by the sea and its ever changing moods. He also has a great appreciation of the Scottish mountain scenery and his greatest delight is to be tramping the hills and climbing Munroos (hills of over 3000 feet). Only recently Calum found time to take up painting seriously and has begun to exhibit in Scotland and in the Iona House Gallery in Woodstock. Nearly all his work, whether it be oil or acrylic, is done by knife - stemming from an impromptu lesson in 1965 given by the Welsh artist, Kyffin Williams. Calum is a supporter of the Mary’s Meals programme to which he is donating 50% of the profit from each sale. Mary’s Meals is an initiative begun by Scottish International Relief (SIR) to set up school feeding projects in communities where poverty blocks children from gaining an education. Mary’s Meals is based on research that consistently demonstrates that an education – even a modest one – is the most effective way of lifting an individual out of poverty. Working closely with local volunteers, Mary’s Meals provides daily meals to chronically hungry children in their school. In this way the hungry child is encouraged into the classroom and, through education, is offered the chance of a better future for himself and his community Amazingly it costs as little as £5 to provide a child in Malawi with Mary’s Meals for one year. Tens of thousands of children are now receiving Mary’s Meals every day in Africa, Asia and Latin America. Sir also run the Iona House Gallery in Woodstock, Oxfordshire, where artists from across the country exhibit works and the profits are ploughed back in the charity’s overseas projects ... Callum currently has some paintings showing at Iona House Gallery. July 30 - August 17 The Rough With The Smooth - Raymond Murray August 20 - September 07 Six by Six - Paintings by 6 Local Artists This is a show unique to Gallimaufry, which they have run for three years now, where six local artists each produce six works in a similar framing format. This gives a degree of uniformity to an otherwise quite mixed show and allows the gallery to present a cohesive exhibition for artists with contrasting styles and varying techniques.
The Six by Six artists this year are Marion-M de’Ath, Barbro Hosea, Jean Marshall, Alistair Lawson, Guy Fallimar and Jim Johnstone ...
