Colin Brown at Mansfield Park Gallery
November 13 - January 28, 2008
'Heroes & Icons' is an exhibition of new paintings by Colin Brown at Glasgow's Mansfield Park Gallery The 'Heroes & Icons' of the title are personal to Brown and feature subjects as diverse as the late great Johnny Cash and football legend Jimmy Johnson through to Lewis Grassick Gibbon author of 'Sunset Song'.
Brown's work is a combination of direct references mixed with random elements to investigate allegory and narrative, and as such they allow for an element of interpretation by the viewer. The paintings, which are created on wood panels, employ a variety of mixed media including acrylic and oil paints, collage, glazes and varnishes, giving them the feel of modern-day icons.
With 'Heroes & Icons' Brown's ultimate aim is to celebrate the spirit of modern culture, the pleasure of finding and using, and the Dada-ist ideal of looking at society in fragments.
Colin Brown is an award winning graduate Duncan of Jordanstone College of Art, Dundee. Exhibition runs November 13 - 28, 2007.
