Mixed Media Exhibition August 18 - September 12, 2007
Andy McClintock All of my work for this exhibition incorporates “encaustic”. This is a wax-based method of painting which combines well with both oil and chalk pastels – my originally preferred medium. I use a hot plate on which I melt mainly beeswax mixed with pigment. This technique flourished 2,000 years ago in Greco-Roman Egypt. Many of the paintings found from this time are almost as fresh as they were when they were painted – indicating the durability of the medium. In modern times major artists shuch as Jasper Johns and Diego Rivera used encaustic. In some cases I have used encaustic to hand finish giclee prints but the main body of work for this exhibition is original painting. The title “Mixed Media” reflects the use of collage, photography, digital manipulation, oil and chalk pastels, tissue paper, found objects etc. Many of my paintings in the exhibition are inspired by “untidy corners” whether they be in Puck’s Glen in Argyll, Scotland, the chaotic interior of my studio, or a pile of broken paving slabs and wire netting; while some also make references to Rothko and El Greco and the “Fayum” funerary portraits from Roman Egypt. Exhibiton runs till November 12, 2007. Top | Ann McClintock's Showcase | Other Exhibitions # am07/001 |
