Brian Madden at Gallimaufry April 30 - May 18, 2005 Brian Madden Brian Madden was born in 1945 in Springwell, a small village in the North East of England. His love of ships and all things nautical was kindled at a very early age by his Grandfather, who would regularly take him to see the great ships that came and went from the once vibrant and thriving shipping industry of the North East. Although Brian showed great aptitude for art throughout his school years, his parents steered him towards engineering. This eventually led him to work in the shipyards of Glasgow and it was as a maintenance engineer, while working aloft in the cranes, that he was able to scan the surrounding landscapes and capture the changes as the seasons came and went. Leaving the shipyards of Glasgow in 1969, Brian joined the tug fleet of Steele and Bennie. He sailed from the Industrial towns of Glasgow and Greenock, to ports up and down the West Coast and Western Isles which provided ample inspiration for many works. His paintings and sketches over the last forty years are an excellent chronicle of the various changes in shipping and alas, the sad decline of this once great industry. A spell working in West Africa saw him diversify into portraiture, which now forms an integral part of his work. He still works as an engineer on the Clyde tugs, and in his spare time can be seen around the Cowal Peninsula painting and sketching. Brian’s solo exhibition in 2004, covering not only aspects of shipping and ship buildling, but also people involved, was so popular that the gallery invited him back for 2005. Here's a small showcase of Puffers and Steamers to give you a taste of what you'll find at Gallimaufry. Exhibiton runs from April 30 - May 18, 2005. Back to Exhibitions # bm000-z |
