Gerry McGirr - Profile

Gerry is a Glasgow born artist who lived for the first 18 years of his life in Loch Lomond. He is now based in Fife where he paints from his private studio.

Undoubtedly the pay-off from Gerry's upbringing in one of the most picturesque areas of Scotland is his love of the Munros (hills in Scotland over a height of 3000 feet). Very few of his paintings show the mountain from the tourist’s eye, and he is inspired by winter in the Scottish highlands, Gerry’s signature is the snow clad mountains a major feature of his Munro collections. When many of us look out to snow fall on the drive Gerry can be found ice axe and camera in hand heading out in search of that perfect winter scene, and returning to paint it from the comfort of his studio.

Collectors of his work are familiar with his skies, a major feature of all his work adding depth and atmosphere.

Gerry is also fascinated with the Scottish Islands and new work is continually being added. Gerry was inspired by a trip to Arran so much so that he now has a portfolio of his work exhibited in the Burnside Gallery in Brodick on the Isle of Arran. He regularly visits the island and is inspired by its changing environment and micro-climate.

Over the years Gerry has had successful exhibitions in Edinburgh, Midlothian, Fife and Glasgow. He recently donated a painting to an exhibition at the Kelvingrove Art Gallery in Glasgow in aid of Scottish Breast Cancer Charities with all profits from his work going to the charity.

He has been commissioned from as far a field as, Australia, New York, Nepal and the Philippines and most recently Canada.

"Painting is just another way of keeping a diary." ~Pablo Picasso
