David Croft-Smith paints from his StudioCroft in Troon, Ayrshire.
Born in Glasgow to parents of an artistic nature; mother a prima ballerina, father an opera singer, David's first love and interest was in the theatre, and for many years directed, designed, and performed, mostly in classical and modern drama. It was comparatively late in life that David went to Glasgow School of Art to find a more independant form of expression. Although he hates to be tied down or pidgeonholed to only one way of expression, David continued for a time to work in the theatre. Likewise his paintings are varied in style and content. His abstract works evoke a world of tension, exuberance, almost of sexual release. David is also a qualified yachtmaster and has spent 10 years sailing his yacht Scottish Warrior around the Mediterranean, living on the boat, and painting for that time. Exhibitions were held from place to place, and sales helped to pay expenses. He is interested in landscape and loves the area where he spent his childhood- the now dead village of Stair. An interest in surrealism has been a big influence in his make up, and hopefully his website will show this in future.
