Jake Jackson I was born and educated in Cumbria, UK.
I moved to London and worked as a photographer for CBS and EMI records photographing musicians for record album covers. I liked being among musicians and played and still play the guitar. At this time I became very interested in Early Classical music and researched the history and construction of plucked instruments. I set up a workshop and made instruments such as lutes, vihuelas and baroque guitars for several years. In 1976 I moved to Sutherland in the far northwest of Scotland. This is a magnificently wild place and in its power demands recognition. The experience of living in this amazing place inspired me to paint again. Most of my current visual references come from this experience. Boats of various types have long been a big part of the culture in the north and I became involved in their renovation and construction. After a period working in England working on boats I returned to Scotland and resumed painting and photography. Nearly all the work I have done since the mid 80’s has been derived from my experience of the landscape in the north of Scotland. In particular I like the meeting of land and sea and the steely greys and harsh whites of winter. What I have attempted to capture is that expansive airy feeling of the sea and landscape that is so powerful in the north. Lately I have become interested in portraying the human persona and looking at the techniques used by earlier painters. Top | Other Scottish Artists # jj09/000 |
