John's stoneware pottery studio is a joy to visit, and his enthusiasm for his subject shines through. He produces both pottery and a range of sculptural ceramics, and always with a high degree of craftsmanship. His work is both functional and decorative. Mainly based on the wheel, (and usually made in a series) all pieces are fired to stoneware (1260c) in an electric kiln. Surfaces are arrived at through several layers of slip, stains and glazes, sometimes through several firings. The pieces with a 'bronze' finish are once-fired. John has a keen interest in the history of sculpture and ceramics and he is also influenced by his local environment - Orkney is seeped in pre-history and world famous for its archaeological interest. While several of John's pieces carry echoes of the distant past, they are very much at home in contemporary settings ... visit galery website at www.stonewareceramics.freeserve.co.uk John's work is represented in many private collections worldwide.
